Bikaner & Jaisalmer  - The Havelis of Jaisalmer - The visual treat continues

The drawing room of Patwas
Room for VIP guests
After seeing the rooms, where business was conducted, we moved to a room, where the Patwas must be treating their important guests. It had Sofas made up of silver, Beautiful paintings on the wall and the biggest attraction of the room was a "Surahi" which was huge and more than 7 feet tall. Another attraction is the Persian carpet in the room.

The courtyard
The courtyard with shops all around on the ground floor. It was not clear whether these were legally rented or encroached upon. The passage to the basement was through one of these shops only. The shopkeepers were trying too hard to sell their goods to the tourists.

After completing the round of the rooms, we reached on the roof of the havelis. From the roof Fort Jaisal was visible. While we were admiring the beauty of fort, a phenomenon rare in Jaisalmer,  occurred. It started raining heavily.

Above is the narrow street on the left-hand side all five havelis are there. The stairs to the first Haveli which we had just come out from are visible. The effect of sunlight on yellow sandstone can be seen. Wherever there is sunlight falling on the havelis, it is making it glow like gold.

This completed our tour of the Patwa Havelis. we were still in awe about the intricate work done by artisans in these havelis and the lifestyle of Patwas, which I think was better than those of the Kings. Things displayed in there, Camera, Fan, Typewriter, Fridge might feel nothing worth mentioning, but consider that they were using these things more than 200 years ago. This shows their forward thinking, openness to technology and luxurious lifestyle.

Our next places to be visited were Manmandir Palace, Tajia Tower and Nathmal ji ki Haveli. This we will cover in next post.
